Stenotype Machines and Supplies
Choosing a Steno Machine
A steno writer can be obtained from any manufacturer, so you are free to choose the brand that fits your hands and your budget. Our curriculum does call for two specific features, so make sure any machine you buy or rent meets them:
- Extended asterisk and final -TS or -DZ keys, which our theory requires.
- A built-in screen, recommended, so you can view your stenographic notes as you write.
If you are not sure where to begin, we furnish a list of manufacturers and re-sellers on request to any prospective student. Just ask, and we will point you toward reputable sources for both new and used student writers.
Loaner Writers
Manufacturer lead times can be unpredictable. So that a delay never keeps you from starting on time, we keep a limited supply of writers to loan while you await the arrival of your own equipment.
Other Equipment You Will Need
Alongside your steno writer, plan to have two more items ready before classes begin:
- A computer with a USB 2.0 connection, used to run the computer aided transcription (CAT) software.
- A digital recorder, used to capture practice material so you can review and refine your writing at home.
Have a question about equipment before you enroll? Contact the Institute and we will help you get set up correctly the first time.
